A lot of people ask me the meanings of the terms used in fishkeeping, such as “what is a hospital/quarantine tank?” and “what does ‘filtration’ mean?”.
This page is going to be a work in progress, however as and when words come up, I’ll update this page with them and slowly build up a comprehensive archive for you all to read, learn from, and use as a reference guide.
Ammonia – Ammonia is a compound of nitrogen and hydrogen with the formula NH3. Ammonia is a byproduct of decomposing organic matter in your aquarium (waste food, fish poo, dead plant material, etc.) and is VERY TOXIC to your fish.
Aquarist – a person who keeps an aquarium.
Hospital Tank – see ‘quarantine tank’.
Osmoregulation – The regulation within a body, using salts, to control the amount of water content within a given cell. Bodies use ‘osmoregulation’ to maintain a balanced and homeostatic state.
Quarantine Tank – a spare tank used to house new fish before introduction into your aquarium, or used to separate ill/diseased fish for observation and/or treatment, and to prevent the spread of infection/disease.
