The Glossary

A lot of people ask me the meanings of the terms used in fishkeeping, such as “what is a hospital/quarantine tank?” and “what does ‘filtration’ mean?”.

This page is going to be a work in progress, however as and when words come up, I’ll update this page with them and slowly build up a comprehensive archive for you all to read, learn from, and use as a reference guide.

Ammonia – Ammonia is a compound of nitrogen and hydrogen with the formula NH3.  Ammonia is a byproduct of decomposing organic matter in your aquarium (waste food, fish poo, dead plant material, etc.) and is VERY TOXIC to your fish.

Aquarista person who keeps an aquarium.

Hospital Tanksee ‘quarantine tank’.

Osmoregulation The regulation within a body, using salts, to control the amount of water content within a given cell.  Bodies use ‘osmoregulation’ to maintain a balanced and homeostatic state.

Quarantine Tank a spare tank used to house new fish before introduction into your aquarium, or used to separate ill/diseased fish for observation and/or treatment, and to prevent the spread of infection/disease.
